Introduction
Prompt Rail is a Claude Code mod that lays out every prompt you've sent in the session as a rail, so you can find your way around long sessions.
- Horizontal (default): a row of bars above the prompt; hover one to see the prompt and its turn summary, click to jump there (terminal only).
- Vertical: a pane beside the transcript, one row per prompt.
- Commands:
/prompt-rail next|prev|first|last,/prompt-rail 12to jump to prompt #12,/prompt-rail find <words>; bind them in keybindings.json, and they work mid-turn. - Only prompts on the live branch are listed; ones abandoned with
/rewinddrop out, and prompts from before a resume are included.
It reads the session transcript (.jsonl), using tail for large files, and keeps its layout in the plugin store. The author requires Claude Code 2.1.280+ with CLAUDE_CODE_ENABLE_FUNCTION_HOOKS=1 in settings.json (early-access wording that differs from this site's 2.1.287+ baseline). Mouse works best in fullscreen; Desktop draws the horizontal rail but cannot jump. The preview is illustrative.
