Crab Buddy is a Claude Code mod that puts a pixel-art Claude crab in the band above the prompt. It blinks when idle, types on a laptop while Claude works, grows a thought bubble while thinking, cheers for 5 seconds after an answer, and naps after a quiet minute.
Each subagent gets a small crab dressed by its type (builder, planner, explorer, reviewer, chef, scholar, wizard, mechanic, designer) that uses its tool while working; up to eight are drawn, the rest counted as +N. Badges under them show model family and effort, and higher effort means faster work. Envelopes fly when subagents message or report back, and a subagent's transcript view shows just its crab. It shrinks below about 85 columns, and colors for unknown agent types are remembered across sessions.
Terminal only, drawn with quarter-block characters; needs Claude Code 2.1.296+ (tested on 2.1.296 and 2.1.302). The same repo has context-bar, warm-compact and loop-graph as separate mods. Scores are docs-calibrated, not run-tested; preview is illustrative.
Who it is for
- People who run subagents and want to see who is doing what at a glance
Requirements
