Introduction
effortless is a Claude Code mod that picks the reasoning effort for every prompt: Low for quick questions, High for hard jobs, with no need to touch Effort.
- Judge: Haiku 5.5 on your own Claude login by default (about 1 s); add TypeSafe's Jev with a key (about 0.25 s). Short replies like "ok" keep the last effort; changing effort yourself turns Auto off.
- Bar above the prompt: effort and model, context fill, prompt-cache time left, and Compact, which turns into a glowing Handoff when Haiku says a fresh chat would pay.
- Handoff and compaction: Quick forks a summary, Full checks git and saves
HANDOFF.md; compactions are summarized by Haiku 5.5 by default. - Alerts: cold cache, swamped context, 5-hour or weekly limits past 80%, with a Save mode.
The author measured 21% cheaper than Opus 5.5 at medium (4 tasks, 3 runs each). Effort only changes on Opus/Sonnet 5.5. Tested on 2.1.285, 2.1.286 and 2.1.288; the terminal may need the early-access env var.
Who it is for
- People who want to cut Opus cost without setting effort by hand
Requirements
- Claude Code ≥ 2.1.285
- The author only lists tested versions (2.1.285, 2.1.286, 2.1.288), no minimum.
- In the terminal it may need CLAUDE_CODE_ENABLE_FUNCTION_HOOKS=1; Jev needs a TypeSafe key.
